The Corliss Group Luxury Travel Agency: Avoiding Scams and Thieves

My wife and I had just left the Musee D'Orsay when a young woman came running up to us clutching a ring.

The pretty brunette spoke in halting English, saying she saw it drop to the ground as we walked by. After a quick scan of our fingers, we told her we weren't missing any rings, but she placed the ring in my hand and insisted we take it for friendship. Before my heart could swell with the joy of international love and brotherhood, she then asked for money for a cup of coffee. At that point, I realized it was a scam and handed her back the ring, which she no doubt tried to foist onto another hapless tourist couple.

While our stay in Paris was overall a wonderful experience, criminals threatened to put a damper on our trip. Before our flight out of Charles de Gaulle Airport, we would be accosted by other scam artists several more times, and my wife was pick-pocketed on the Paris Metro. Luckily the hipster shorts I bought in a Parisian boutique were so tight, I could barely get my fingers into my pockets, let alone a common thief do the same.

Unfortunately, theft and scams are all too prevalent in most major metropolitan areas. Staff members at the Louvre actually went on strike for a day earlier this year, protesting the unsafe working conditions caused by thieves and scam artists. Bob Arno, co-author of Travel Advisory: How to Avoid Thefts, Cons, and Street Crime While Traveling, estimates about 70 percent of Barcelona tourists will be approached by a street criminal; of those incidents, about 33 percent result in the loss of valuables.

According to the US government, Paris, Barcelona, London, Rome, Amsterdam and Naples have the highest number of scam artists looking to take advantage of naïve or distracted tourists.

Travel expert Rick Steves recently noted some of the most common international travel scams and ways tourists can avoid them. Other advice to consider:
·         Forgo purses or strapped bags in favor of body wallets or buttoned pockets.
·         Leave fancy jewelry or expensive watches at home. Don't flash expensive electronic equipment –- particularly iPhones, thieves love them –- around. Have the number for the local police department saved in your phone.
·         Keep your passport and other important documents in the hotel safe, after you've scanned or photographed them and saved them in a file-sharing app or program like Evernote or Dropbox.
·         Stay alert. While you might be tempted to buy that second bottle of wine after dinner, realize drunk tourists are easy targets.

Going on Vacation? Use Our Credit Card CheckList!

Going on vacation? Congrats! You’ve earned it. To maximize your enjoyment during your time away, you’ll want to make a few essential preparations. The last thing you need is the credit card company freezing your account while shop-hopping in Soho or guzzling Hefeweizen in Munich. Here’s a quick checklist of easy steps you can take to ready your accounts for a trip abroad.

1. Call the credit card company
2. Make a list of essential info
3. Get up to speed with your rewards program
4. Get a better travel card
5. Know your holds and limits
6. Pay your bills in advance

Call the credit card company

Creditors take active measures to detect theft and prevent fraud–for both your and their own sake. When they notice an aberration in spending patterns, they often freeze the suspect account to stop potential criminal activity. If your credit card hasn’t left Ohio in two years and it suddenly starts making extravagant purchases in Seoul, the issuer will likely deactivate the account until you verify your identity and location. This can result in major inconveniences abroad, especially if you don’t have easy access to a phone line. Call your credit card companies a week or so in advance to tell them your travel plans.

Make a list of essential info

When traveling, you put yourself at greater risk for losing a card due to theft, negligence or silly mistakes. When this happens, you need to act fast to close your accounts. Before you travel, make a list of your account numbers and the phone numbers for the corresponding credit card companies. Give one copy to a trusted friend or relative, and stash the other deep in your suitcase. You can put this information on a mobile device as well, but it will be compromised if you lose your phone. The ability to connect quickly with customer service will minimize the damages of theft or displacement.

Planning a trip? Ask the crowd

It's a familiar ritual among backpackers: ripping a chapter out of a thick Lonely Planet travel book as they move to a new destination, leaving the tattered pages at a hostel to lighten their load.

But as more travelers turn to friends, Facebook and other online communities to plan their trips, the Lonely Planet paper trail has begun to shrink. In its place is a new crop of high-tech startup sites that use online crowdsourcing to offer real-time travel information and personalized recommendations.

"There's no way I'm going to carry around a big thick book (about) China or Europe," said Shanti Christensen, a world traveler who calls San Francisco home. She wants to know what her friends are doing in those places, "because we all have similar traveling habits."

Startups from Silicon Valley to India are building online portals where travelers can find ideas for their next destination, tips on the best places to eat and sleep, build itineraries and share their adventures. Crowdsourcing -- soliciting contributions from a large group of people -- has turned the average traveler into a travel adviser.

"We look at what our friends say and we change our plans accordingly," said Henry Harteveldt, travel industry analyst at Hudson Crossing, a financial advisory firm in New York. "It boils down to two words: trust and credibility. If you know the person, if their perspective on how to travel is similar to yours, you'll give their insights more weight."

Until recently, there were few options to quickly find timely recommendations from trustworthy and like-minded travelers, say travel experts. Many tourism bureaus don't have the technology resources, and a Google (GOOG) search of "best restaurants in Bangkok" will dredge up about 16 million results. Recommendations in Lonely Planet and Rough Guides are often at least a year old by the time they land in the bookstores.

Travelers also have complained about the number of anonymous, outdated and fake reviews on leading travel site TripAdvisor. The company says it screens all reviews and removes any that are fake or offensive, and recently started a crackdown on fraudulent reviews after discovering thousands of bogus hotel reviews.

The Corliss Group Luxury Travel Agency på Planerar en semester

Planning a vacation? Avoid travel scams

The Corliss Group Luxury Travel Agency: Senaste bedrägerier

The Corliss Group Luxury Travel Agency: 41 Years Strong

With so many new travelers visiting us, you may wonder who is The Corliss Group, and what do they do for the travel world?

When my late husband, Dick, and I started in the travel business we operated deluxe domestic tour travel. This company was called Corliss Tours. It was very successful and grew quite large. We sold it. Our next company was called World Adventures In Travel. We did just that, went International. That company grew and we sold it! We then, under the umbrella of our last company, started an alumni group, called The Corliss Group. After a time, we bought back our client list and started a third company, The Corliss Group. And, it remains that to today.

We are still considered a tour operator, and we do in fact operate domestic and International tours. However, in the late 80's cruising came into play and The Corliss Group became a seller of Crystal Cruises, even before the first ship, Crystal Harmony, was completed. Since that time, The Corliss Group has remained in the top five for sales annually for Crystal Cruises. The Corliss Group offers you, the traveller, Experience, Excellence, Expertise, and most of all, Superior Service.

We look forward to hearing from you. Call soon to inquire about your next travel tour or cruise adventure.

The Corliss Group Luxury Travel Agency: Health and Beauty travel tips

Quick Tips

·         Periodically wash your hands with soap and warm water, a cleansing wipe, or disinfecting gel.
·         Keep your hands away from your face as much as possible.
·         Drink bottled water and check the seal if water quality is in doubt.
·         If water quality is in doubt, use bottled when brushing your teeth.
·         Don't forget your sunscreen, lotion and lip balm.

Medications

Visit your doctor a month before your trip. Any vaccinations should have time to work their magic and become effective enough to protect you when arriving at your destination. Also, any side effects from a vaccine is best handled way in advance of departure.
Common medications can be difficult to find in another country. Pack disinfectants and over-the-counter medications. (Check if your store has a "travel section" where everything comes in small packages.) We recommend bringing the basics: something for pain, headache, motion sickness, and diarrhea. Don't forget anything for the kids if they're tagging along.

Be sure to bring enough prescription medication for the length of your travels.

Carry a list of all names and dosages of any medications. If an emergency occurs, rescuers will have some knowledge of your medical history. Have the list in an obvious place where someone may look, i.e. your wallet or medical alert tag.

If you have any allergies or medical problems, be sure to wear a medical alert tag (bracelet, anklet, or necklace), or have an identification card that prominently displays your condition. Have the name and phone number of your doctor on the tag or card, if possible.

Driving or Flying

If you're flying (or on a long drive), be sure to stretch your legs and walk a bit. Blood clots can occur in anyone, regardless of health status. You may want to wear compression stockings if you have irregular circulation, are pregnant, or are completely healthy and just want the extra help.

If you're pregnant and planning to fly, check with your doctor and the airline to be sure you can do so at this time. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends that the safest time to fly while pregnant is between weeks 18 and 24, and not to fly after the 36th week. Airlines have their own flight restrictions for pregnancies, which can vary according to whether you are flying domestically or internationally, and which airline you will be flying. (Some airlines won.t allow you to travel for 30 days before your due date.)

The Corliss Group Luxury Travel Agency on Air travel tips

These tips are mostly for those of us who don't (or can't) travel Business or First Class. But even so, there are many general tips that will help anyone have smoother travels by air.

Quick Tips

·         Don't wear a belt when at the airport
·         Empty your pockets into your carry-on before security
·         Dress comfortably
·         Stay hydrated, drink water
·         Bring snacks and entertainment if you are picky

Departures

Check-in at the airline's website before your flight, and use the electronic kiosks at the airport whenever possible. These kiosks print your boarding pass, saving you time, especially when some airlines have separate queues for those passengers that have already checked in. (You can also proceed directly to security after printing your pass if you have no bags to check in.)

Security check can go smoother and faster if you:

·         Do not wear a belt. Yes, you have to take it off for security, so just skip the hassle.
·         Wear shoes that don't require a lot of work. You have to remove them and put them back on for security, so keep them easy. No knee-high boots, no complicated lacings, etc.
·         Take everything out of your pockets beforehand. Everything! Put items from your pocket into your carry-on outside pocket so you don't have to fill your pockets while others are trying to get through security as well.
·         Take your jackets and sweaters off. These will go through x-ray, so be ready.
·         Be ready! Usually it's the person in line who's not ready beforehand that causes the line to slow down. Multiply that buy everyone who wants to get on a plane, and you've got a traffic jam. Don't be one of those people.

If you lock your luggage, unlock them BEFORE security asks you to do so. Use TSA approved locks so security doesn't have to cut your locks off. The lock's packaging will state whether they're TSA approved and can be purchased at the airport or travel stores.

Remove previous flight tags and stickers from your luggage to prevent confusion.

Arrivals

Make your luggage distinguishable. Feel artsy? Paint it! Have kids? Sticker it! Or, sew some patches on. (You can also buy luggage that isn't black.)
All claims about missing or damaged luggage should be made at the airport, before you leave.

While Flying

Get up and stretch, walk the aisle, and hover around any spacey spots on the plane to stand for a bit before sitting back down. Commit to some seated exercises, especially if you're stuck in the middle and can't get up as often as you should. NWA has illustrated examples

Take off your shoes. This can relax your body during flight and help the swelling that may occur at such altitudes. Walk around in those warm socks we talked about, or just pack a pair of small slippers in your carry-on.

Thankfully, no one on the flight cares what you look like, so dress comfortably! Wear looser garments like sweatpants or a comfortable pair of jeans. Use button or zip-up jackets or sweaters. Wear a warm pair of socks as temperatures can drop while in flight. Don't wear a top that causes you to constantly fidget. Depending on the climate of your destination, you can layer, or keep that outfit on the very top of your luggage so you can change in the airport's restrooms. If you MUST wear a suit on the flight, choose your most comfortable, pack the jacket and shoes in your garment bag, and tie the tie later.

Bring some food in your carry-on incase the airline runs out, which happens (trust us), or if you need an extra snack. Choose food that is compact, easy to eat, and won't make a huge mess. Health bars usually fill you up, but snacks such as cookies and chips are always a treat. Water is the best bet for quenching thirst; sodas and juices keep you wanting more. (Check with airport security about bringing liquids through - sometimes you can't, and must purchase them afterwards.)

Fight jet lag by setting your watch to your destination's time as soon as you're on the plane. If you'll be sleeping, eat before the flight and inform the attendant you won't be having a meal. (Don't cover your seat belt so that they don't bother you to check if it's fastened.)

Carry tissues! Even some handy wet wipes.

Many people swear by such things as Airborne - in any case, take extra care of your health and hygiene to prevent jet lag and illness. Wash your hands and keep them away from your face as much as possible. Protect your fellow travelers too; cough and sneeze into your handkerchief or arm, not your hand - or worse yet, into the air! On shorter flights, you can wear a protective mask if you're really worried about the passenger behind you that may sound like he's coughing up a lung.

If there's a more comfortable seat open, ask the flight attendant if you can sit there.

Recirculating air not only increases your chances of getting sick, but it dries out your nose and skin. Carry a small bottle of hand lotion and some lip balm. Also, try breathing your nose into a hot towelette that the airline may give you - this can help relieve your airway.

For long flights, we would highly recommend investing in a neck rest. Carry a soft one, or pack an inflatable version in your bag. The soft ones are more comfortable, but aren't space-friendly. Eye masks are handy too if the airline doesn't give you a pair.

Corliss Travel tips while abroad

Quick Tips
  • Leave valuables at home! Not in your purse or car. In some areas, don't even leave it in the hotel room.
  • Use a money belt. These are small, zippered pouches that either attach around your waist or onto your pants' belt loop. It sits inside your pants and is not to be pulled out for every purchase. Place into it important documents - passports, cash, plane tickets, ID, etc. Prevent body moisture from messing up your papers by putting them in a little plastic baggy.
  • Carry only a daily amount of spending cash in your front pockets.
  • If you're carrying a purse, use one that zips completely closed and straps diagonally across your chest. If you don't have one for across your chest, have a very short strap where the purse will rest under your arm as you carry it.
  • Europe is renowned for the petty thievery which can quickly destroy your trip. Read and learn from some popular tourist scams (from fellow travellers) on the internet. Or, ask us at the Corliss Group for some stories.
